Hi! I'm Linda, an old/new chicken "mom". Had them about 20 years ago and my daughter decided I need them again and picked out some (7) for this year: Sussex. I love these ladies!!! We all live in Northern Michigan where it can be hot in the summer, but cold to very cold from October to May (unfortunately). So far I've managed to build the ladies a warm coop with plans for a new one next spring. They have just gotten old enough this week to start laying eggs, so far 9 this week. I'm still in the learning stages, but thankfully Hattie and the Ladies are very forgiving and friendly towards me. They are very social... Only had 1 bad episode so far and that was when I lost one to a coyote last week - so I'm now down to 6 and they are now confined to their coop area, no more free range (and they're mad at me for this, but they'll get over it). They have about 650 sq. feet to roam in the open coop area and about 80 sq. feet in their closed coop - I think they'll be okay.
I have to say that it's good to be able to read through all the different forums...it is helping me to be a better chicken mom. I'm a widow and live on 2 acres with my daughter and 4 "itty bitty" dogs. They love to watch the Ladies. I love the outdoors and doing everything I can outside - hike, fish when I can and just enjoy Lake Michigan (I'd rather be outside than inside). I also love to sewing, cook and play/teach piano; and have 5 grandkids, 3 girls and 2 boys; ages: 16, 12, 4, 2 and 5 months.
