New to chickens

Hi! Welcome! :frow   Are they ever cute! So you started with 2...then purchased 5 more. :thumbsup  That's called chicken math! :clap  Chickens can be quite addictive!  Medicated feed isn't really an antibiotic, it contains amprollium to help young chicks combat coccidiosis. If they all look healthy with healthy poop (not runny or bloody), you can feed up what you have and switch to starter/grow mash or crumbles.
Sounds like you were well prepared! If you'll click the drop down arrow in Forum Navigation bar, you'll see the different forums you can research and post any questions in. Best of luck!

I want even more. 6 seems like enough though. Although I'm told not to keep more than one rooster so I guess depending on how that goes I'll just replace the rooster with another hen! No bloody poo. It's actually not even really runny anymore. The little ones poo is still a bit runny. I'm hoping to get the organic , no soy, no corn, non gmo feed. Although im still unclear why corn is "bad". All I know is I've become totally and utterly obsessed with my chickens.

Well, we're here to help as masterful enablers! 6 was plenty for me, I have 15. BTW, there are great recipe threads to use up your extra eggs! I don't breed, so I don't have any roosters but yes, one roo will do. No corn, soy non GMO, I'm still unclear why any of it is bad. I'm a fence sitter, happy to have fresh healthy eggs from happy healthy hens that aren't laced with steroids and antibiotics. Isn't it nice to have those choices? The obsession grows. Chickens are so funny. So entertaining and relaxing. So many laugh out loud things they do. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

I wasn't planning on getting any Roos intentionally. The feed store was unclear on sex... Some guy sexed them for me but I'm not sure what I have. One passed on the way home. He/she chocked on a loose string from the towel I had put under them. It's now buried in our yard with some baby birds that got abandoned in a nest on my porch. That was sad cause I watched them from egg all the way until they first hatched. Anywho their personalities are ready starting to show through! Some like to be held and some don't. One is RAMBUNCTIOUS! The two bigger gals HATE HATE HATE to be separated. They are Beat friends. I don't really want to breed. Raising chicks is a lot of work. And I've only been doing it a few weeks. I know I'd have to separate them from the adults and it seems like a full time job. But if I have To then I suppose I'll suck it up and just do it

Cute chicks, thanks for sharing the pictures. Good luck with your new flock and if you have questions, feel free to ask. There's a ton of information here and a lot of friendly members.

Nice to have you here!
