Hello,
My name is Lori. I am new the chicken world although my sister and our oldest son have had them for years. It's taken me a decade to convince by husband, but after he retired he seems to have the time to give to another hobby.
Our first step is to build the coop. I hope I can get it finished before the spring chicken hatch. I plan on modifying the Wichita Coop to fit our yard. We live in the Eastern Sierra in the high dessert of Bishop, CA.
I am a Dental Hygienist and my husband is retired Public Relations. We aren't professional builders, but we've done lots of projects over the years and look forward to a new one. We refer to ourselves as " keystone construction."
We are also California Master Gardeners, and plan to use our chickens in the garden as bug control and fertilizers.
My biggest concern is when the chickens get older and stop laying, I won't be able to eat them or give them to someone else to eat

Although I'm not vegetarian, I love animals. We will only be able to keep 4-5 chickens per city regulations. But, I'll cross that bridge when we get there.
Thanks for all your support,
Lori

Welcome to BYC, Lori! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have; we are happy to help. Have you checked out our learning center yet? Tons of helpful info there! https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

You sound like me - I could never eat my chickens that I've raised myself. I grow way too attached to them! My hens will continue to be cared for and loved even after they have quit laying.

Good luck with your new chicken adventures and welcome to our community!

Hi Lori,

Good for you on getting the coop ready before the chickens, they grow out of the brooder quickly. Have you decided on breeds yet? There are so many to choose from, I'm sure you'll find some you like.

Thanks for joining us!

Hi Lori and a warm welcome to our community. I hope you enjoy raising your chickens and being a member of BYC as much as the rest of us!

All the best
