New to Chickens

Hi bdorsey! Maybe you could give a little more information, where are you located? That would help people direct you to a store near you. I think the shots that are being referred to are for Marek's. It is optional. Where are you getting your chicks from?

I don' know where we're getting chickens from yet. Not too much available locally, so I'm looking through the internet.

We live SW of Knoxville & I went to Tractor Supply and our co-op today & found plenty of organic food options. What about oyster shell & some of the other additives?

Oyster shell is an optional supplement to supply extra calcium for egg production. Use depends on what you are feeding your chickens.
Flock feed- Intended for all birds. Oyster should available on the side for layers.
Layer feed- intended for layers only (not chicks, juveniles, roosters, etc) as it has additional calcium included. Good for layers, but can be harmful for mixed flocks. Oyster shell can be offered on the side, but shouldn't be needed.

In addition to Oyster shell, you should seriously consider grit. It is small hard rocks (not oyster shell). If your birds eat much of anything besides commercial feed (insects, plants, whole grains, etc), then grit helps them digest those materials. Free ranging birds may not need it as they can pick up pebbles from the ground. Like oyster shell, offer it on the side.
