(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Us, I am new to chickens. I got my first chickens on Saturday.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 6 chicks 1 week old

(3) What breeds do you have?
Barred Rock

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
So far it's been a family project. I'm looking forward to weed and pest control and eggs later on.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I enjoy gardening and sewing. It's always a struggle during the summer on how to divide the day so that I get to do both.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am a stay at home mom, in a busy house with 3 children, with aspirations of starting a clothing alterations business.
In addition to our new chicks, we have 2 cats, 2 guinea pigs, and a dog. Crazy dog barks at everything that walks by our house. I'd love ideas how to keep him from scaring the chickens.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

I found BYC looking for coop plans. I put the cart before the horse and got chicks before coop. I want to make coop/run portable. There are lots of photos but no specifics for wheels so I'm sure they can hold up/support weight. I want to be sure I'm giving enough room but not making so big that I can't move around myself.

Barred Rocks are my favorite breed! They are super sweet and laid back. Since you are new to chickens - In general, the more you handle your babies the more friendly and touchable they will be as adults. Also, start NOW getting your dog used to them. Dogs love to kill chickens so it needs to know that they are not to be hurt.

Hi and welcome to BYC and congrats on your birds.

Hello! Welcome to BYC!! :frow

Are you just worried about the barking scaring them? They'll get used to that. My chickens barely take notice when my dogs bark, or run after a tennis ball through the middle of them!

Here's an article for a hoop coop chicken tractor:

Feel free to check out the links below for some interesting reading. Good luck on your adventures!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
You will get pest control but not weed control. Chickens eat anything they want. They won't discriminate between what you consider a weed or a plant you want. If they like it, they'll eat it!
