My first batch of chicks weren't from my rooster either, but he would still call them over, hand them meal worms I was feeding them, make sure the other hens wouldn't bully them. Even when mom moved on he still looked after the babies, even chasing her away when she started getting eoufh with them. He was so great we decided we wanted to breed him. My rooster is very nice with my current batch of youngsters but they aren't his offspring.

For sure. He's also amazing with the hens. He will do the egg song with them, and even with the neighbors hens. And he will stick his head into the coop and chear on any hens who are laying.Those are certainly traits you would want to promote!
