new to chickens

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
You'll have to truly secure your coop. There should be no opening larger than 1/2" and all windows should be backed with 1/2" hardware cloth.
You should also have a 2 foot predator apron around the coop to prevent digging.
I would also put out chicken safe rat traps.
Good luck with your infestation and with the current injured hen.

No need to apologize for needing advice! We all love to help!!
Hope the cats are able to help with the rat problem a bit, if you are considering another dog to help, can't go wrong with Rat terriers! Or any terrier breed really...they live for tiny critter chasing!
Welcome to BYC!! Thanks for joining!!

Hi! Welcome to BYC! You've come to the right place for help! You've already gotten some good advice here, but I was just wondering if there is any possibility that one of the rats was poisoned and your chicken is foaming at the mouth because of that. Just a thought. I hope you don't have anymore loss!! Hope the kitties help!! :hugs
