Hello, welcome to BYC! I hope all goes well for you.
I've found that I'm less stressed with a smaller flock...and yet, I'm close to 50 again.
It is likely that you will lose some when free ranging. I have lost a few. We mourn the loss and keep on going. You have to weigh the pros and cons...and maybe get an LGD/ lifestock guardian dog. A dog can't usually save them but like roosters, they are a great alert system. You could also use electric fencing in areas to help keep predators away.
