New to chickens

Hi all, I've taken care of a lot of animals in my time, but never chickens. We want chickens for eggs. Just bought 10 Smokie Pearl chicks, about 3-4 days old. I have them in a watering trough like the store had them, with light, water and food. Keeping then about 90 degrees F. I have read if their poop is caked, to get it off. So tonight was my first time cleaning a chickens butt. I'm looking for Rhode Island Reds as I was told they are good laying hens. So I'm looking for chicks 101. We live in Georgia. Thank you

Welcome to Backyard Chickens.. Make sure they are not sick with coccidiosis can happen in the young.

Welcome to BYC. Pasty butt is rough on them.
You might fix them some electrolyte water. Be sure they have plain water available too.
Check the temperature in your brooder, so they don't get too hot or too cold. Both can cause pasty butt. Make sure they have plenty of room in the brooder. Most people seem to overheat chicks, rather than letting them get too cold.
Clean them at least 2 to 3 times a day. Mineral oil is a big help for cleaning.

Ello.

I remember having chickens up until my late teens and they were awesome. Hilarious personalities and very amusing. Had a mix of barred rocks, bantams, brahama and few other I am not sure what they were.
