New to chickens!!

:welcome:welcome:welcome

Welcome to BackYard Chickens! We're happy to have you here! Have you thought of just raising chicks to adults then selling them? (So basically starting hens for others who don't want to raise them from chicks.) This would give you chickens every year that you can make a small profit off of that you won't have to worry about while you're away. ;)

As far as meatbirds, it might be helpful to check out this section of the forum: Meat Birds ETC. Because meatbirds are a lot of work, along with expensive to raise (depending on the feeding plan) and nearly impossible to keep clean (breed and space may play a factor), I don't recommend them being your first chickens unless you're prepared for the hardships they'll have that's different from your average chicken.

danger copy.jpg (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I don’t own any chickens, yet! I am trying to gather as much information as I can so I can successfully raise some chickens. Last thing I want is for creatures to die because I lack knowledge. I have already gone on this website for answers, and found questions I didn’t even know I had!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Zero!

(3) What breeds do you have?
None! Looking at starting with Cornish Crosses. My boyfriend and I are travel nurses and we are not ready to be tied down to our house full time, but I really want chickens. This was our compromise :)

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I’m looking for a hobby for now, but I would like to generate skills to provide a more sustainable life for my family.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, walks, video games (Zelda on Nintendo switch).

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am an emergency room nurse that travels for work 3 months of the year and works a per diem job back home. I have a cat, her name is Olive Garden Breadstix. She is indoor only but I would like her to spend some time in the backyard, we are working on that. I have a boyfriend, he’s great. We are getting married in October!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I became more seriously interested in chickens when I looked after my neighbors flock when she was out of town. Now I am fully obsessed, looking into chicken stuff all the time!!
