all the above is good sound advice and where you are i`d make sure that it was a coved coop ie wire over the top then just jump in thir not to high of a cost to get started stay cheap to start no fancy birds that way if you lose some by learning you are not hurt to bad most of the time you can find some to start at the flea market . and this time of the year alot of the time thay are thinning thir heard cuss egg por. is down in cold weather and feed go`s up it is rewarding but you may have a hard time with the meat end and only be in it for the egg`s as you said your wife and kids ready to start this good luck if I can help just ask p.s try reuseing stuff like tin run it at the bottom and put it atlest 1 foot in the ground an use post out of the trees you have to cut down baby moniteor are great for prodators you can find the at yard sale for less
