new to chickens

I keep hearing about the "chicken math" and I think it is already effecting me even before I have chickens :) My new question now, that it is September in Minnesota do I wait until spring to start my flock? I have found some beauties on craigslist and are there any thoughts on mixing breeds AND ages of hens. would it be better to start my flock when it is warmer cuz our harsh winter is just about to start.
