Me and my family are thinking about getting a few chickens for eggs my question is if I have 4 ppl in my family how many chickens should I get? And in order for them to lay do you need a rooster? Also what breed is best for egg laying?

If you are looking for 1 egg a day for each member of the family, I would go with at least 6 or 7 chickens. Some birds lay every day, some don't. So this amount of birds should deliver at least 4 day or more. You do not need a rooster to get eggs...hens lay reguardless and having a rooster does not make them lay more. As for good layers, the Orpingtons, (Buff Orpingtons and Australorps) are both great layers as are the Leghorns, Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, etc...

Take a look at our breeds page to see what people are saying about the different breeds and their laying qualties...

Also, here is a good link to an external page with great info on the over all aspects of the breeds...
