My husband and I are getting three chicks tomorrow and want to make sure we have everything we need for our new little girls.
Here is the list we have put together so far:
-plastic tub brooder box
-adjustable fixture and heat lamp
-starter feed
-feeder
-waterer
-thermometer
-bedding

And we read that adding apple cider vinegar to their water can help prevent pasty butt?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. We are really excited to be living in a place that allows us to have chickens (and we are in an area that just approved goats!...maybe next year :)

Thanks!

Welcome. Sounds like you have just about everything you need. I do put apple cider vinegar in my birds' water but not until they are 2 to 4 weeks old. Depending on where you've gotten your chicks and how long their travel time was to your home (shipped? Car ride?) you might want to add a little sugar to the water for energy the first few days or you can get powdered chick enzymes and add some of them. Good luck. What breed are you getting?

We are getting chicks from in state, so they will have had some auto travel. Depending on availability, we will be getting either barred rocks or australorps. Thanks for the tips about the sugar or enzymes!

You will also do well with a wire top for the brooder to keep chicks inside (they try their wings early) and keep house pets etc., from getting in with them.

Welcome to BYC!

For the waterer, you may want to put some clean marbles in the dish part...chicks have been known to accidently drown while trying to drink.

If you haven't already done so, read up on the articles in the Learning Center, there is a lot of good information there:

Congrats on getting your first flock, you're in for some fun!

Hi everyone,

Thank you for the welcome and the replies. We picked up three Barred Rock chicks this morning with all the supplies, and they seem to be doing great. They are already very friendly and very curious about us and seem to like be handled. Everybody has clear eyes, nostrils and vents. They are eating and drinking anytime they are not asleep or running around and climbing their feeder.

We appreciate the info this forum has to offer and looking forward to raising these girls. Next up.....coop build.
