new to chicks and have LOTS of questions!!!

You could try putting electrolytes in their water. How are they acting? Are they eating/drinking? Are they too cold/too hot?

From a BYC paige:
Homemade Electrolyte Recipe for weak/ill chicks
2 C. Water
2 TBL. Brown Sugar, honey or molasses
1/2 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp. Baking Soda
Mix until all dry ingredients dissolve & Keep refrigerated
You could also use electrolyte drinks Gatorade or Pedialyte, or
3 drops of POLYVISOL (liquid childrens A-B-D vitamins)
Slowly drip along inner edge of lower beak.

kathryn, electrolytes are in the water. they were fine. until yesterday. i saw in the box one was on the back it was still breething but it didnt look good. so i took it back to the store, today i changed cedar shaving to pine, and another chick is dead. 2 more or 3 will probably go tonight.
i am sooo sad i want to cry.

QUESTION - If chicks seem to be doing fine, should I continue to give electrolytes and probiotics in the water? Will it hurt them to keep giving it to them? The solution is a little more diluted than the directions say. My thinking was to give it for the first two weeks and then slowly wean off but I really don't know.

And I'm free-feeding the medicated. They have feed in a feeder and a little more in the egg carton top. They love scratching around in that. That works, right?

I can wait until they are feathered so I can take them out. My outside trash cans tends to get maggoty in the summer before the haul to the dump. It will be CHRISTMAS for them!!!

It's up to you. It won't hurt them to keep with it. I just use ACV in my chick water.
Yep, that works

They will LOVE that! Usually after two weeks old they can start taking day trips outside when the weather is warm and they can move out once they're fully feathered usually around 5-7 weeks. I do it that way without heat lamps even at night and they've always been fine.
