Hi. We're Larry and Shirley from Beech Grove, Indiana, and we're just beginning to think about giving this a try. Gotta get a coop built and then we'll be looking for chicks. We're really enjoying reading through all the helpful hints and information. We had no idea there were this many chicken lovers out here!

Hello Larry and Shirley!

You know, you can always get chicks and build the coop while you brood them.

They won't need a coop until they are at least 6 wks. old. That would give you 6 wks. to build a coop.

That's exactly what I did. My husband is in the process of building a coop and my chicks are now 3 weeks old. We decided to get chickens for Easter for our 2 children (well . . . mostly me). They are adorable, but growing fast. We have 3 Leghorns, 1 Rhode Island and 2 Comets. This is a new adventure for our family. So far they are very lovable, we've held them constantly since day 1. They eat out of our hands, climb on us and we enjoy them alot. Just can't wait for them to get outside, the dander is a bit much in the house. We do have a greenhouse that we have been letting them roam in during the say so they are warm. The temperature on Long Island has been fluctuating and the last 2 days they have been cooped up in their brooder. You can tell they are getting antsy to get out, but hopefully tomorrow.

Hello Larry and Shirley

Welcome to BYC...its amazing how fast a person can build and buy items when you are motivated and reading BYC helps alot!!
When i first decided to get hens i thought 5-7 would be enough, i now have 14 and still thinking of maybe 2 more! They are precious and fun...and yes addicting too.

I am so glad i found this site...loaded with great friends and helpful information about so many subjects.
