Hello all,

My 8 year old son and I decided to start raising chickens as a Father & son project. We have 6 RIR chics, 2 Brahma chics, 1 Black Giant chic (unsure of sex), 4 Barred Rock chics, & 1 Barred Rock Male (6wks old). All of females are 4 wks old. Not really sure what we are doing lol, but we have read just about everything we can find on the subject! We have had the chickens for about 2 wks, and just brought the male on sunday. So far everyone is doing fine, but the best part for me is seeing the interest my boy has in them and the joy he has in being around them! Well that is our intro, any and all advice is welcome, I have to appear to look knowledgable on this subject in front of the boy! LOL!!!!!

from Ohio. I think you will like it here. There are a lot of great folks that are willing to help whenever they can.

Hello from Brooksville. What part of Tampa are you in? Do you have enough space for all those chicks when they become adults? There is a lot of good info on this site. Also, there is usually one chicken swap a month in the Central Florida area. You can go to buy/sell birds, purchase supplies and most importantly, talk to other chicken breeders. Do as much networking as you can and get to know the people at your feed store. Raising chickens is a lot of trial and error with a huge learning curve. I grew up with chickens and I still find that I don't know squat.

We live not too far from the Buc's stadium. We own a corner lot with a huge back yard that used to house 6 bulldogs, I think it should be enough space. The wife and I are looking for a house in the Plant City area with alot more space (Acres).

Do you have a house for them to sleep in? Check to see if you can have roosters. I know parts of Tampa don't allow them even though they are running wild all over Ybor. It won't be an issue until they start crowing, but I'd hate to see you get attached and then not be allowed to keep them. Also, make sure they have nest boxes when they get old enough to start laying. You'd hate to spend every day doing an Easter egg hunt, especially if you find an egg that's been outside longer that you realized.

LOL, I have had the easter egg hunt thing go through my mind a thousand times! We have them in a 20' by 20' by 6' high dog pen that I built a coop in. I have to check on the rooster thing, I didn't know that they were not allowed, A few of my neighbors have small flocks but I thought they didn't have roosters because they only wanted eggs and no new babies. Thanks for the info, definitely don't want my little guy to get attached and then we have to get rid of the rooster.
