New to Ducks

I have raised 7 at one time and did fine, but when I raised 5 in the winter, is was a pain in my butt!

I would only do 1 male, and 3 females.

Thats a good size :)

Eat, sell, hatch, ect. Also bake!

I went to the co op the other day and picked up 2 baby ducklings, to my suprise, I got 2 girls! :woot

Duckgirl you are lucky. When I picked out 5 muscovy, I ended up with 4 males and 1 female.

To the OP, if you are getting unsexed, straigfht run ducklings, have a plan in mind on what to do if you end up with a bad ratio of male:female. Better to plan ahead. I couldn't give excess drakes away.

Yeah, I went to the co op yestersay, picked up a Black east indie, and a fawn and white runner. And I vent sexed them today to find that the indie is a girl, and the runner I think is a girl. didnt want to show me as much as the indie. Indie is deffinetly a girl. Im glad to, I want a bantam to go broody for me when its older...

Sorry you had such a horrible ratio :(

Also, last year I went to the same co op to get my very first ducks, I got 7. 5 boys, 2 girls. Sucky ratio! they ordered from the same hatchery and everything too!

X 4 I love Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks. I just bought the updated edition and am re-reading it, too.

Another idea for duck eggs: I scramble extras and feed them to my dogs.

For pets, Pekins are my favorites. I've found them to be very personable and mellow--not at all flighty or high strung.

I ordered the book! Thank you all so much! I've decided on two for now, the Khaki Campbell and the Buff. I hope to add two Welsh Harlequins if these two go well! I'm getting really excited for the little guys! I'm not sure yet if they will be sexed or a straight run. I plan to call the feed store and find out. Once again, thanks for all the responses!
