I have seven pullets. One started laying just over a week ago. I found an egg in the nesting box just now that's the same size hers have been, but is noticably lighter in color. Is it her egg or so you think a new hen started laying?

Also, another hen came into the roosting box while I was there. Did all the usual nesting routines (this would be her first time!). She sat there futzing around for awhile and then made the announcement that she had laid an egg. Except, she hadn't. I watched her for awhile after that to see if she laid it after that, but she's back to her usual. Is that normal?

There can be some variation in shell color especially when a pullet first starts to lay. It is normal for a pullet to check out the nest boxes days before she actually lays. One of my young pullets spent all yesterday morning in a nest box arranging and rearranging the bedding-no egg was laid.
