Our almost 19 week old Easter egger laid her first egg last Friday and her second egg today, Monday. During her egg laying ordeal, she hopped out of the nesting box and started putting pine shavings on her back. Just curious what she was doing...
She then returned to another nesting box and laid her egg.

I've seen many hens do that. Only they know why for sure that they do it for. My guess is they are attempting to camouflage themselves or the nest, and it's an instinct.

One of my EEs will spend a lot of time making the nest "just so" a nice round little hollow. I've seen her pulling pine shavings into the nest box from the floor if the coop. My guess is your little girl's instincts told her to make a nest, but she had no clue how. Just an attempt to "do something" maybe.
