(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Completely new. I grew up in cities most of my life, my family was military too so we moved around a lot. I have almost no experience with animals except for dogs or cats, but my husband is a country boy and has his mind set on turning his grandparents' old farm into a real homestead. I'm out to learn as much as possible before he gets me in over my head with all this stuff. He says chickens are the next thing on his list to get covered, so I figured I better start reading up now.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We have no chickens yet, but he's been trying to find a hatchery closeish to us.

(3) What breeds do you have?

I think he's wanting either a meat breed, or really good layers. Possibly a combination of both.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Google. I was looking up info on how to take care of chickens.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I sew, knit, and crochet. My husband recently got me started on canning as well.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I have a cat. My husband's grandma has goats and one angus cow. I'm pretty sure it's a boy cow. And 3 miniature donkeys. He and I help out a lot out there, and I still feel a little overwhelmed. My husband and I have been married a little over a year. We have one daughter(4) from my previous marriage, and recently discovered that we'll be having another child in June.

This place seems to be a wealth of information, and I can't say how thankful I am that I came across it. I don't suppose any of you may have some tidbits of advice that you'd wished someone had given you before you got elbows-deep in chickens, would you?

Now, if only I could find a similar forum about rabbits. He's wanting to get some new zealands too.
