So far I have decided on Orpington or Black Australorp day old pullet's. I am still debating on the amount of chicks, i am aware some hatcheries provide small orders such as 5 or 10 chicks, which is what i am looking for. Will start with 5 and see how it goes. My goal is mainly egg production for my family, which so far consists of my husband and 3 dogs. I want to start from young chicks so I can learn and be experienced if a ever to decide to expend my flock.

I've raised both Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps for years (still have both breeds) and they are wonderful birds. Both breeds are very hardy and calm and gentle (my children, and now granddaughter, made lap pets of both breeds). I personally think that the Buff Orpingtons are a slightly prettier breed than the Black Australorps, but if high egg yield is a priority, the Australorps are the better layers of the two breeds. Not that Orpingtons are bad layers (they are quite good), but Australorps are the best layers of the standard breed, brown egg laying breeds. A Black Australorp holds the brown egg laying record with 364 eggs in 365 days, and while none of mine have ever reached that kind of production (and likely never will), I've still had a few of them lay over 300 eggs in a year. Another option you might consider for the ordering numbers is a larger order as smaller numbers do not ship as well. I always order 25 pullets (not straight run) at a time, and then recouped my money by selling off the extra chicks. I always get a couple of roosters even in pullet orders, but with the order form showing that I ordered "pullets," I don't have any trouble selling the extra chicks. Whatever you end up getting, good luck with your chicks.

I am glad we agreed on the breed. You gave me something to think about in regards to size of shipment.....
