Hello. I've been reading and researching a lot on this site in anticipation of getting chickens this spring. We are allowed to have up to 6 chickens in my area, but I think we are going to start with 4 and leave room for expansion later if we decide to.

Right now I am still in research and learning mode, and focusing at this point on coop design. There is a lot of information out there, and the "search" function of the forums as been working great since most of the questions I have had so far have been answered already.

This seems like a great community from what I have read, and I look forward to joining in on conversations as we begin our chicken keeping journey!

Hi and welcome to BYC. In your shoes, I'd be inclined to go your max number of permitted birds as integrating additional flock members requires planning, space and additional (even if temporary) construction.

Here’s a link to the Articles section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/ There you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - Find Your State Thread

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you include your general location on your profile, this will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have.

I see that Pork Pie mentioned the Topic of the Week articles which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. One which may be of particular interest to you at this stage is:
Topic of the Week - Getting Started, Keeping Chickens

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!
