New to Geese...Period

Hi, I'm back again. It's spring here, calendar wise that is. I want to know why my geese are getting on the back of my gander. Does he not know what to do and the females are trying to show him? When the females get on "Buster's" back, they are in the swimming pool that I have pictures of on here. He was a year old on Feb 13, is he old enough to mate? I know he is the gander, by his personality, and the other two geese have laid eggs. As a matter of fact, my other goose who was also a year old on Feb 13 has been sitting on a nest of eggs for about four or five days now. Does she know if her eggs are fertile, or is she just sitting on them regardless?

Thanks for the help.
She doesn't know so in about 3-5 days you should candle them and toss the ones not developing.I usually candle on day 10, And as for your girls going after the gander my goose does this she literally throws herself on him. But you haven't actually seen him breeding them? oh and usually when a gander mates he lets the county know by giving off a holler. Other than seeing mating first hand you can hear the victory call.

Thanks Ms Lydia. What is the easiest way to candle the eggs and what should I be looking for, blood spots or an actual embryo. No I haven't actually seen them mating, but yesterday in the pool Buster did get on Lucy's back, but he was backwards. Is Buster to young at 1 year to mate? Actually I am anxious to have babies, I would be thrilled if that happened. Come on Buster, get the hint, the girls are trying to show you how, and you just lay in the pool with a dumb look on your face! LOL

Hi jarrec, are you 100% sure buster is a buster? At a year old he should be extremely keen... One of my geese here behaves a bit like a gander, is more erect in her carriage, people on here have mistaken her for a gander, but she´s definitely a goose. Could you simply just have 3 geese, who at times are mounting each other?
A year-old gander would be very obvious, like MLyd said. They really do think they own the place, king-pin. They swan around, too. Does Buster match up to that?

How do you mean make pictures of them? I guess if Buster was a goose he would have laid some eggs by now and he hasn't. Yeah, he is the one who goes after the dogs coming down the front steps with his neck stretched out, running to them like he is going to pluck them and he hisses at them. He is guarding the nest that is close by that Clover is sitting on. He is definitely the more aggressive and inquisitive of the bunch. I heard that the gander has a higher pitched voice than a goose and Buster's is definitely a higher pitch than the girls. He is grooming himself in the pool at lot more than the ladies, he actually has his feathers kind of chewed up on the ends because of being in the pool and plucking at himself. I ordered him from Ideal Poultry as a pair, and he is the one not laying eggs and since they were a day old it was like he was protecting Clover, or always getting in front of her when I got near their box. I sure hope he is really a Buster.

Well, sounds very strange. Haha, he sounds like one of those guys who´s so worried about his appearance...shiney shoes, etc, but not much more!

You said you bought them as a pair, but I´m not aware that you can sex tiny poms. From what you say, it does sound like he´s a gander, with the guarding and high-pitched voice, but seems to be overdoing the preening bit!! Well, lets hope he gets it sorted soon.

As regards the eggs, after a good few days of incubation, if you get a good but small torch, and take an egg into a dark room, and shine the torch up against the bigger end of the egg, it should make it look a bit transparent, and you should be able to see little red veins developing inside around the membrane. If infertile, you´ll just see through the egg, nothing going on inside.
