DS has 2 gray toulouse m/f for a 4H project. I have half a dozen chickens free ranging and they stay right near the coop and the 20 large evergreens. We live 500 feet from the road so its quite a hike. Can I let the geese free range during the day too? I'm worried they might head for the road to fight cars. They get along well with the chickens when we have them out so I'm not worried about that. They were with the chickens for the first 2 weeks so I think they consider them part of the flock.

Also, do we have to clip wings or something to keep them from flying away or don't gray toulouse fly?

I live 100 yards from the road and my geese as a rule don't stray (I did have one get nailed last week for the first time in 4 years trying to get to some green stuff on the other side as I live in an arid type area and most of the graze has dried out). I seriously doubt they would hike to the road if they have what they need around the pens. Toulouse geese can only fly enough to clumsily get a few feet off the ground and only for short distances...there is no need to worry that they'll fly off. They should do pretty much the same as your chickens do.

I lived 200 feet from the road and used to free range. The geese noticed that I would stop at the mailbox at the road and got in the habit of waiting for me there and racing me to the house. thats how they learned to fly. One day I came home and there were feathers and geese laying everywhere. They all got up to greet me except the boss gander, it was his feathers that was everywhere and he had been dragged under a vehicle. The 'road rash' went to the bone and his guts were hanging out. I put him down and that was the end of free ranging....
