New to group-Lost first chicken- RIP "Hedi"

I found our famous "Hedi" acting very slugglish this afternoon. I went to check on her again and she was gasping for air every third breath and she was lying on her side in the run. I took her into the hen house and made up her bed and laid her in it and sat with her for a while and she did drink some water for me. I checked back later and she had passed. We have seven other chickens and they are fine??? there was no bloody poop, bare butt, nothing? What is wierd she was the biggest out of the group? Any suggestions on what it may have been? All chickens are fine today.

SO I had a mini funeral this afternoon with the seven chickens and my two girls and we made a "burial area" including head stone. It was sweet but very sad to loose "Hedi".

I'm so sorry about your sweet Heidi. It's so hard when they pass like that and leave no clues as to why they passed.

It is really hard to say as to why she died the way she did without having a necropsy done. Has she been laying eggs? Could she maybe have been eggbound? Have you ever wormed your chickens? Could she maybe have had worms? What was her age? Could she have died from old age?

There are many factors that need to be taken into account before you can diagnose what was wrong.

So sorry she died.

I'm sorry to hear of little Hedi's passing.They sure can worm their way into your heart,can't they?I know you'll miss her greatly.....

She was a very unique girl. she would "play dead"!! She would be walking around look at you and squat and fall over and just lye there for a bit and jump up and walk around again!!

She was an easter 2008 chicken; and was a double yolk layer; I have never wormed them?? I achually never heard of it how do you do that??

You may not need to worm them.

If you suspect worms then it is a good idea, but it's not always a good idea, since you cannot eat the eggs for a while and the wormer is hard on a chicken's health.

Different wormers treat different kinds of worms.

I believe that a chicken that dies of worms is usually pretty thin.

Do you think that when she was "playing dead" she could have been having the same sort of episodes that finally did her in?
