Hi All - I am new to the BYC group. I have wanted chickens for my whole life. I was raised on a farm but was never allowed to have chickens. We raised cattle, pigs and horses. I have been researching breeds, coops and care of chickens for at least the last 2 years. I currently have 3 Rhode Island Reds, 3 Buff Orpingtons, 3 Brown Leghorns and 3 Silver laced Wyandottes. They are between 4 and 5 weeks old. Not sure what we have for hens and roosters yet. They are just getting to the stage that you can start to tell. I have been making predictions since I got them and well, I am sure I have been 100% wrong on most of the them but the journey has been fun so far and I am looking forward to growing and learning from all of you!

Greetings & Salutations, Welcome. You will find a wealth of knowledge on this site from members who want to help. Pictures help in determining sex, best at a few/several weeks older. As you have 12 that are undetermined sex, you need to know that you probably will want about 1 cockerel/roo for 10 pullets/hens.
Post pics, ask questions and read articles, search forums. I am not nearly, far from it, in knowledge as many of the members But you need to know what you have (when the feathers/combs/crows etc, present). Not advisable to have too many cockerels (young roos) to too few pullets/hens. Ask and you will receive help.
Once again, Welcome.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

So happy for you to finally get your dream of owning chickens!

Be glad you don't raise silkies as these we don't usually know sexes until they're around 3-4 months old. I have chocolates and mottled ones though that are sex-linked, so those I know upon hatching. I kind of feel it's cheating. :)
