Hello everyone!! I (we) am new to everything about chickens. My family consists of myself, my husband, and 4 children (8, 7, 5, and 1 1/2). We are trying to find out as much as we can about raising chickens. We live in central Louisiana. We are looking to raise dual purpose chickens and are still trying to find out the best breed for us. Any suggestions? We are looking for a breed that is dual purpose, gentle, friendly, any obviously good traits to have around children, and one that can stand the Louisiana summers.

Thanks!
Jessica

I would suggest you look into Barred Plymouth Rocks--- they are the black and white striped chickens so familiar on farms long ago. I

have also heard really good things about Black Sex-links, named that because at hatching the gender can be determined immediately from the chick's coloring. They are also called Black Stars. People say they are very sweet tempered, they are egg-laying machines and they grow big and meaty enough for the table.
