Hi everyone. I've been lurking for a year or so and finally decided to join! My name is Brenda and I currently have 7 hens and one rooster. 2 Barred rocks, 3 Ameracauna's and 2 red sex links. The rooster is unidentified so far. All my girls were laying prior to the summer heating up, but a few have taken some time off to cool off. I also have 22 guinea fowl that are little pest control tanks. They keep the grasshoppers away from the house and barn. Have enjoyed reading all the posts.

Welcome to BYC! So glad you could join!

We love talking about poultry, so feel free to join in any conversations, ask questions, or just post fun stories or pictures.

Best of luck with your birds!

Hi Brenda, welcome to BYC!

Pretty Siamese in your avatar, I used to have one and think they are great cats.

The heat can really get to the chickens. There are some things you can do to make them a bit more comfortable (maybe you're already doing these):
* frozen water bottles in their waterers
* extra waterers
* spray the run down a couple times a day or put in a misting system
* provide cooling treats like watermelon, cucumbers, grapes
* as much natural and man-made shade as possible

There are other ideas here on BYC, you can use the Search feature in the top left side of the screen to find them.

Nice to have you here, make yourself at home!

Welcome to BYC!

It sounds like you have a lovely assortment of birds!

Are the guinea fowl noisier than your chickens? I heard they were great for tick control.

The guineas can be loud when they are growing up. The new females are the loudest and seem to like to practice their "buckwheat" call for no reason at all. After they mature, not so much. The males will sound off as an alarm and can be very loud. Luckily my husband and I don't really mind and just consider it part of living in the country. In a neighborhood, they would not be appreciated. They are great pest control. They eat all manner of insects and that is the initial reason we got them. We have terrible grasshoppers in the summer. And they chase off predators, so I like that with my chickens. We have watched the guinea flock chase off a fox, a racoon and a coyote! They alarm on snakes as well.
