New to Keeping Chickens in VA

I don't. I live in the mountains so it would have to be a breed that is ok in heat and cold. It is just my husband and me, so we don't need a prolific layer. I would love a calm or average personality bird. I want to interact with them. I welcome suggestions.
Barred Rocks. Get 20 or More

Hello Caryn, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

You live in a warmer, rather than colder climate. I would suggest Wyandottes, Australorps, Rocks of any color and Easter Eggers. All lovely birds that will not lay a ridiculous amount of eggs.

Hi Caryn, welcome to BYC. So you're taking the methodical approach to chickens - probably a good idea. This is the place to learn.

Had I not just jumped in head first and learned about chickens on the fly, I probably never would have ventured far into it. Still a novice myself and this is the right place to pick the brains of others. Many fine folks here willing to impart knowledge and skills.
