New to meat birds

I want meat birds but I'm not liking the idea of them being genetically enhanced

I want healthy happy birds, what are my options?

You do realize that pretty much all breeds of chickens have now been "genetically enhanced" through selective breeding, exactly how the meat breeds have been, don't you? The CX have not had any genetic modification of any kind other than very selective breeding to produce a particular type of bird and that's all. The same as the leghorn and the RIR production birds have been all these many long years to produce more eggs.

The CX can be happy and healthy if they are raised much like one would to keep a happy and healthy dual purpose laying bird....they are only unhappy and unhealthy because people raise them in small pens and feed them up like pigs simply because they have a fast metabolism and are born hungry.

This is what they can be if given the chance....

Your options are much what they've always been....raise dual purpose cockerels until they are 5 mo. old and kill them or raise meat breed birds until they are 2-3 mo. old and kill them...the meat breeds will have more meat on them at 3 mo. than the dual purpose birds will have on them at 5 mo..or even 10 mo.....in fact, they will have twice as much or three times as much meat on them than the DP birds. One is bred for one job and the other is bred for another.

Or, you can capon dual purpose cockerels at a young age(2 mo.) and raise them to 10 mo. of age to have a more meaty bird, though caponing is something one has to learn to do and do well in order for this to be a success. They still won't finish out as heavy as a meat bird of the same age, though.

Or...like I do...you can raise both! The DP are for eggs & dark meet, the CX fill my freezer.
I also can both of them. I was lucky to stumble across Bees posting a few moons ago.
My CX do not lay around in their ****. Sadly to many do not research. This past fall was the 1st time I did not have time to butcher & took them to local processor. He kept complimenting us on the condition of the birds. Should be standard, not the exception.

Thank you guys, I guess we always see the worst of cx but my layers are super healthy and love to free range. And now my meat birds will be the same! But

I live on vancouver island anyone know where I should order from?

Something climbed my 5' electrified fence with razor wire to get my two ducks and left no evidence except 2 small tufts of down on the razor wire. The print in the yard looked initially like a dog print. Could a coyote or bobcat get over to do this?! The print was big 2 1/2" and as I said, initially I thought a dog. I thought the cat was taken too because he has never stayed out over night but he showed up the next morning scared. He refuses to go out now. The chickens in the yard aren't phased at all but the chickens and ducks were just separated by a 4' fence.

Grey fox can actually climb trees. They'd have no problem getting over a high fence. I bet a coyote could get over a 6' fence.

We don't have gray foxes here; just red. At least that's all I've ever seen. The print was pretty big for a fox. How big do they get? This print was 2 1/2" long and probably about as wide.
