New to quails

Here's the difference so you can be certain. A coturnix quails head is light on the sides, dark on top, and it is a light strip right down the center of the head..... like these.

Bob whites have light colors on the sides and solid brown on top (no light stripe down the middle). They also have a black stripe behind the eye. Like these......

That was extremely helpful, they are definitely bobwhites, thank you!

Can you mix both breeds in the same coop

I don't know first hand, but I've read about it on here. Pretty much everyone says it's not a good idea. They say chicks "can" do okay together but once the bobs mature they tend to go on a killing spree. Hopefully some bob experts will chime in and give you some advice.....

So I ended up ordering coturnix quail eggs to hatch, they should be coming this week. I've never hatched any eggs before. 😬Any advice on coturnix?
Have lots of calibrated thermometers, a reliable hygrometer, and keep the humidity around 30%. Those are things I learned during my first couple of hatches.

Patience. Lots of patience. Mark the calendars.

If you want to candle, get a good flashlight. I candle at 7 days and pull the clears. Then at 14 days at lockdown to remove any obvious quitters. 500 lumens flashlights work OK with white eggs. I like the 1000 lumen light for darker and quail eggs. A little hard to look into them. Candling isn't required, but it prevents exploding stink bombs in the incubator.

Test run your incubator empty for 2 weeks to confirm reliability and settings. It doesn't take much water to get humidity to swing. Play with it and learn the incubator.

Have fun and if a bird brained chicken can do it, so can we! I have Quail Batch #13 in the incubator. Started December 2018. Neat stuff.
