As far as I coop I totally understand the price issue with them I recently got Chickens and ended up building my own Coop out of wood I found on Craigslist and old boards from around the house the only thing I ended up having to buy was the hinges, Screws, and a few 2x3's and 1x1s total I think I spent $45

Thanks for all of the welcomes every one!

On the coops, great that you built yours for $45 Dreamer4217. Did you use some type of coop plan? -Or, did you dream one up in your head?

Hi TexasChickenhopeful,
We live in Georgetown (near the square) and have been interested in raising some chickens for a good while. I found this forum while trying to search for the latest laws regarding this for G-town. I've seen some good coop designs and would build my own. I have a 9 year old son who's wanted to raise, or be involved in raising a chicken. If you get close to selecting a design, let me know as I'm a carpenter and would certainly not mind exchanging some work for a egg or two, and letting my son see how this all works.
I've been in Engineering for over 20 years now, but that hasn't stopped my love of building things, including restoring our old 1895 home. I just don't feel right unless I have a splinter stuck in me somewhere!

I will still be looking into how we might be able to have a small coop on our place, but I can already envision the sour look on the city officials face as he's driving by wondering what I'm up to again.

TCH,

I bought my chicks from Ideal Poultry in Cameron. It's about an hour and a half drive, or they can ship them to you. There's several feed stores in Georgetown. Google them up and give 'em a call. I bet at least one will have some chicks for sale. Buck Moore's Feed Store in Austin definitely sells chicks (if they're not sold out). They actually had some Marans chicks a couple months ago, and those are pretty rare.
