New to raising chickens and this site has been a great resource

Hi, I am Lisa. I live in Tampa, Florida and just started raising chickens. I have 9 total. The are all about 5 months old. I have three Silkies (two turned out to be roosters), two Silver Laced Wyandottes, two Golden Sex Links and two Buff Orpington's. The two silver laced and the one golden and one buff started laying eggs about 3 weeks ago. I am getting about 4 eggs a day right now. Still very small. Waiting on the two to start laying. I could spend my entire day outside with them, and sometimes I do! Love watching them. They are very spoiled and other than loving crickets and mealworms, they are very picky with treats. I keep searching for their favorite. They love blueberries and watermelon. Scrambled eggs too! I also have three dogs. A female maltese, and two shih tzu's. They all go in where the chickens are with no problem. My biggest shih tzu likes to go in and eat their food. I found this site searching for an answer to some of the chattering they do and I really like this site. My go to now for answers. Thank you! The picture is of a frog that got caught in netting I had to put up to keep the girls from knocking on my front door. I looked over and saw them all just staring intently at something and it was this frog. They didn't bother him, just watched very curiously. They even stayed and watched me free the frog. I think he was too big for them to eat because I have seen them catch small frogs. Of course the one that catches it gets chased all over the yard by the others trying to steal it from her.

I too could spend all day outside with my chickens. Sometimes I do! Mine are huge on lap sitting, they all scramble to get the best spot closest to mommy on my lap. :D

Hi Lisa, We live in Tampa too. This is a great place to get answers for all your chicken needs. I live near Citrus Park and get supplies from Shell's or Foxes Corner in Odessa. Found a local supplier for meal worms on Craigslist yesterday. She is actually listed as South Lakeland. She sells worms and worm farms. Planning to make the drive out there next Sat. to get a worm farm. What part of Tampa are you in?

I live in Seffner, actually. Used to live in South Tampa. Just not used to saying Seffner. I'll have to look on Craig's list for the mealworms. I have ordered them online (along with crickets), but I would prefer to buy local. I am trying to raise my own mealworms, but it seems to be taking a while. So that sounds like a good person to contact. My girls (and two feisty boys) would eat them all day if they could. I buy my "stuff" from either Antioch or Harold's. Both equally supplied. I like customer service better at Antioch. I am afraid I may have to rehome one of my male silkies. They are so pretty but they have started to squabble a bit in the past few days. I am just afraid to give him to someone that won't take as good of care of him as I do. :-)
