New to Raising Chickens-Coop Advice

Hello!! I am new to raising chickens, I've been doing as much research and looking on this website A LOT! Our chicks are about a week old and my fiance and I are going to build our own coop. We live in the KC, MO area. What advice do you experienced chicken raisers have? As far as ventilation should it be open all the time or should it be able to be closed off? We are thinking of using a poop tray that slides out for easy cleaning, yes or no on this idea? I'm hoping we can get a coop up in 6 weeks, we shall see!! I appreciate any tips you have! Thanks
