The pros and cons of having a rooster? First thing that comes to my mind is chicks (that's a pro) and crowing (for some people that's a con, I like it myself). Roosters are also known for alerting their flock to predators which can be very helpful if you plan on free ranging.

If you decide you don't want him, try to find him a home or let him become someone's dinner...unless he's a special breed, you probably won't be able to sell him because there are most always more roosters around than what is needed (1 rooster can take care of 8-10 hens).

Just because you have a rooster doesn't mean you have to have chicks. While your eggs will likely be fertile, you don't have to hatch them. Roosters protect the flock, take care of the hens and are just really awesome to have around unless you've got a bad one. They're not so common, though. I love roosters and my flocks wouldn't be complete without them! I enjoy crowing when I notice it. We've gotten used to it over the years.

If you don't really want one, though, why keep him?

Sorry that I can not assist with your 'keeping a rooster' questions, we live in a no rooster zone so the decision has been made for me.

However, I did want to say that I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share more pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

A rooster can handle 10 hens, less and they tend to get overbred. The hens will continue to lay just as many eggs (albeit infertile) without a rooster. A lot of people forgo having a rooster and the girls seems less stressed without one.

Yep, that looks like a cockerel to me. Pros: Your girls are more protected from predators with a rooster. Some roosters can be very kind and kid friendly. Chicks, if you do want them. Cons: Crowing - loud and early. Could be mean and aggressive, it depends on the breed/bird. Chicks, if you don't want them.

So I'd say if it's legal and if you like that bird a lot, then keep him! But if you're not the biggest fan, I'd give him away. Hope this helps!
