Hi I am new to raising chickens. Bought 3 RIR and 1 Black Sex-Links (?) (my grand daughter just had to have a black chicken lol) now about 4 mths old and 6 more RIRs about 2 mths old . Just last week was given a RIR rooster & hen, also 2 other hens (1 with 2 chicks) we think they might be New Hampshire Reds? Still soooo much to learn. Any and all suggestions will be great since I am winging it lol. Thanks

First ? I have is: will mama lay eggs while she is still caring for babies???

My understanding is hens care for chicks for about 4 weeks before resuming laying.

Good luck with your new chickens. Most hens don't lay eggs till they wean their chicks. Some hens won't lay for some time depends on the hen. Hint you might want to keep a eye on your RIR roo, I have always heard that the RIR roos have a tendency to be a bit on the aggressive side. Congrats on becoming a member here and hope to hear updates on your birds.

Thanks everyone. Yeah my husband had already done the chicken thing, and was so not wanting to do it again. I wore him down, I think it's pretty cool, really enjoy having the chickens. Of the 3 "laying" hens I just picked up last Sunday, only 1 is laying, we now have 6 eggs

. My grand daughters & I are very excited everyday to go and check for eggs. "Although hubby was not into it, he did build us a coop and painted it purple with white trim (think he is coming around).
