Hello,
We're a new chicken family (almost 3 weeks now) and have fallen in love!

Our adventure began when our friends, who are also new chicken owners, hatched several chicks in late February. We happily welcomed Thelma and Louise to our new coop when they were about 14 weeks old. Sadly, Thelma was a rooster, so he went to live with a new family.

We acquired 3 new babies from an ad on Craigslist and introduced them to Louise. She was a bit grumpy at first, but seems to have warmed up to them just fine.

Louise is an Easter Egger and is now the leader of the flock. We believe Lovey Dovey is a Buff Orpington, Missy Elliott might be an Australorp, and are hoping Henny Penny is a Silver Laced Wyandotte. I'll post pictures and would love to hear some knowledgeable opinions. My only experience is the countless hours of research I've done on the Internet in the last few months.

We are hoping all the new babies are pullets, because we can't keep a rooster in our residential neighborhood.

They forage in our backyard in the daytime and sleep in their coop at night. We are feeding Purina Start/Grow Medicated feed, Probiotic Chick Boost, scratch grains and some scraps. I'm also treating for possible coccidiosis with Sulmet (sulfamethazine sodium) because I noticed Henny Penny had a few poops with blood the day after she came home with us.

We are fortunate enough to have a wonderful feed store nearby with a very helpful, friendly staff.

The babies love to sit with me in the evening and have started roosting on my shoulders. They seem to enjoy being pet and I have a feeling they will be very friendly chickens when they grow up.

We are a human family of five. My husband Bryan, Trevor 17, Chase 15, Kate 4, and myself, mama hen. We have a cat named Jack, a goldfish, and 2 baby guinea pigs. Our beloved yellow Labrador, Frank, died last year and my husband, a fabulous handyman, converted his custom built doghouse into a chicken coop.

We're looking forward to all the chicken adventures to come!

Angela

Welcome to the wonderful world of chickens!

Chickens are a great deal of fun, great hobbies and great pets. The four breeds you named are all friendly, hardy, and good egg layers. I myself have an Orpington, an Easter Egger, and a Wyandotte. I wanted an Australorp but I they weren't available at the time I was getting the others, so I decided to wait.

The chicks sound like they are doing very well, and are very happy. I look forward to seeing pictures of them.

Good luck!

Hi Angela, welcome to BYC!

That was a very nice intro, fun reading about your chickens. I hope you end up with all girls, it's too hard to give them up once you get attached. Bet the kids are having fun with them.

If you'd like to meet other members in CA, here's a link to the state threads:

It's nice to have you here and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. There are a lot of friendly, helpful members here and a lot of information available.

Here are some pictures of our chickens. The pretty cream multi colored one is Thelma, "he" moved to a new home.
Any thoughts on the breeds of the babies would be greatly appreciated.
From what I have noticed so far, Henny Penny, the black and white one has what looks like a rose comb. The Buff and black have single combs. I'm guessing they are about 2-3 months old?
