New to Raising Chicks and curious if this is a bad case of pasty butt or something else.

Helping my Mom with her first baby chicks. She currently has 6 chicks that are 6 days old. I just noticed this Salish Seascape has this on it and she ran some lukewarm water and tried gently cleaning/wiping the "mess" away but decided to stop before potentially harming a new family member. Any help will be appreciated and thank you kindly in advance.

It looks like poop, but is there a vent prolapse underneath. Poop should dissolve with warm soapy water rubbing it between you finger and thumb (don’t get the chick too wet, and have a tissue or towel ready.) If you see a protrusion from the vent, that is a prolapse. Clean it off, and put some vaseline or hydrocortisone cream on it.

This is what a prolapsed vent looks like:

Do not let it dry out, but keep it moist. Is the chick eating and drinking?
Thank you, was definitely poop. I ended up watching and following a video on cleaning "poopy" butt and the chick is all good now. Fortunately, no protrusion but got the vaseline for good measure.

My Mom was worried it may have been the chicks insides so I was apprehensive to do anything at first but after researching some pics and videos, as you had said, found out I was just poop. Alot of it...

I appreciate the help!! Both my Mom and I are "first timers" and have near no knowledge of raising chickens.
