Hello everyone, this has been a dream of mine to have chickens šŸ“. This is a new experience for us-we have 15 chicks presently, they just turned 4 weeks old last Wednesday. I am eager to learn from all of you on what I should or should not be doing. I have been giving them small amount scrambled egg and small bits of watermelon as a treat. They also have chick starter, chic grit and clean water available. As I read different articles I feel I am doing things wrong. We did let them in a small enclosed area yesterday for about 30 minutes and then back to their coop (located in our garage- still have heat lamp, and plate). Chuck (my husband) has just about finished their permanent home and if I have read correctly they can go to their coop at 6 weeks. They are getting their feathers in more each day. I look forward to learning and sharing with all of you!
We live in Missouri, and both of us have retired.

assuming that your temperatures don’t get below 40*F, then they can go out now without any heating. Even if you do wait until 6 weeks, I would take away there heating as they will be perfectly fine without it. Just adds one more thing that could potentially go wrong.

Welcome to BYC!! :frow

I wouldn't worry too much because if it works for you and your chicks and chickens, then it's not wrong.

It's always different for us because of the different seasons, plus each batch is different too. Sometimes they get heat for 5 weeks, sometimes for 2. Sometimes they go outside at 2 days old, sometimes not until they're 2 months old. We just play it by ear.
