I have a couple of silkie chicks and considering a third from the same guy I got these two from. I know it is pretty much impossible to sex silkies early on so I know I could be completely wrong but just based on chick behavior and a couple of physical qualities (based on reading I've been doing) I'd say one is a roo one is a pullet. Obviously this possible third could be either or as well. What I'm afraid of, knowing my luck, is I will end up with 2 roos and only 1 pullet and would hate to have to get rid of one! I already love these two and this was something we decided to do just for fun in the back yard (we have a laying flock in a run down at the barn). I know all the usual info- 1 rooster per multiple hens or you're looking for trouble. BUT I also have heard and read so much how different silkies are in so many ways and how docile and easy going they typically will be. So I guess I was wondering from anyone that has had a similar situation- with silkies specifcially- how it went for you?? Any success stories?

If you post here (or on a new thread) we may be able to help you sex your silkies : D

I had luck with 1 silkie boy and 3 silkie ladies (+1 bantam cochin they raised and thought she was a silkie too) but after he passed away, one of the chicks they raised turned out to be a cockerel. So we kept him, the 3+1 ladies was NOT enough for him, even when he was put into the flock of I think 12-15 at the time? He needed more ladies. He went off to a farm where they had over 20 ladies and he lived out some really good happy months until he attacked one of their kids (I think she was like 6, a big no no) and you could probably guess what happened after that.

It'll depend GREATLY on your individual boys (if they turn out to be so) How many chickens are you allowed? Are you in an area that limits it? or limited by space/family/time? You could see if anyone nearby-ish has adult silkie pullets/hens once yours are bigger?

Thank you for your input! We have a mixed flock of chickens and ducks we keep down in our small barn with a fenced in area of its own for eggs. We recently decided to get a couple of silkies just for fun to keep in our own backyard basically as pets. Worst case scenario, yes we could fence in another section down at the barn or try to integrate one of them with that flock, its just that wasn't what we got them for so I'm hopeful it just ends up being a scenario that works! I believe I will just have to be patient (which is very hard for me :) ) and see what I end up with as well as what their personalities are like!
