Hello, from Ohio, I am Jill. I found this site when I 1st purchased my hens/rooster as babies. I was able to gather some really good information from the site. Needless to say I am back because, Tommy, my rooster is attacking my family. lol I think he hasn't attacked me bacause he thinks I'm the boss of him and his hens. He knows I don't have no problem in making him run for cover. lol I don't let him mate his hens in front of me, nor do I allow him to boss them infront of me. Since he started doing it a couple weeks ago and I started correcting him, I've noticed he doesn't do those two things infront of me now.

Thanks,
Jill

Hi Jill and
welcome-byc.gif
! Glad you joined us. I think you hit it right on the head - Tommy sees you as the alpha and sees himself 2nd in command with the other chickens and your family, below him. I've never had a mean rooster but I've read on here about people with mean roos picking them up and holding them - not to tame them as much as to show them, "Hey - you're not in charge - I am and I'll release you when I'm good and ready!" Maybe your family members can try that. Conversely, I've also read about people giving them a swift kick when they get rowdy. Probably lots of options in between those two. I'm not advocating one or the other or either - just reporting what I've read others do. Best of luck with Tommy!

Hello and welcome to BYC

I had a roo that used to grab my hand and try to mate with my arm. Needless to say he got a few free flying lessons! Don't take nonsense from your boy!

Thank you, everyone for all the welcomes! It's greatly appreciated! I think you all are right about the advice you've given me. I have read the same things in several places on the internet. I've told my family to either stay out of the pen or take a water bottle with them and show Tommy who's boss. Needless to say they are letting a little ol' rooster keep them scared out of there. lol If you spray Tommy with water, he will high tail it and run for cover. My hens and Tommy are only 5 months old so it's not like this has been going on for a year or more. He just started attacking about a week ago. I think when the hens started maturing to get ready to lay eggs is when he thought he could get a big ego. Because before that everyone could socialize with him and he'd be fine. It started with my 17 yr old nephew. Tommy hasn't attacked him, but when my nephew goes into the pen, Tommy dogs him out by standing in the barn doorway as if to say kinda, "I dare you to try and enter my barn." lol Tommy ends up standing his ground and my nephew leaves out of the pen. lol

Hi and :welcome

Good luck with your rooster. I like that water bottle trick.
My hens frequently attack my feet. No roosters here, so they probably think they can get away with anything, lol.

I hope you find all the info you need here, and enjoy the site. :D
