Hello my name is amanda and I am new to this site, glad to have found it

. I have two muscovy ducks 1 male and 1 female. I was never looking to have muscovys but our property has a pond on it and backs up to a very nice stream. well jake ended up on my property one day and he was waaay too social to be wild so I figured he was a fugitive on the run lol. I did try to find his owners but they could not be found. in upstate NY we can have harsh winters so my husband built jake a pen indoor/outdoor. and my neighbor and I went and got him a girlfriend at a farm upstate from us. so needless to say jake and daisy are nopw a bonded pair. HOWEVER I am having BIG problems with poor little daisy. she is 9 months old now and she started bleeding through her wings last week. I found out this is a blood feather issue. But she keeps rebleeding because jake keeps mating with her! I am trying to get him to leave the pen to go to the pond for the day so little daisy can start to heal but he wont leave the pen without her it seems. no daisy is all scabbed up underneath her wings its like a light brownish color. now I am putting banix on it and using gauze to clean the area. is she going to be ok? is there anything else I can do. if someone inboxes me I can give my email even. and daisy is not laying any eggs and she is 9 months old now is this normal?

I'm not familiar with Muscovy and I'm not sure how to deal with your wing issue- but you should probably get your boy some more lady ducks. It sounds like he's breeding her an awful lot and not only is that going to keep reinjuring her wing, but it can also cause internal problems for her in the long run :(

thank you I think I will do that or maybe I should let them out to intermingle with the mallards maybe that will cut down on the breeding

I wouldn't let them out with the mallards because then they will gang up on her. Get Jake a few more Muscovy females They really do like their own kind since they don't speak the same language as the Mallard derived breeds. As for egg laying Muscovy's are excellent at hiding their eggs so she maybe doing that or just now getting ready to lay My Muscovy females are all usually 9-10 months old before they begin to lay.

@amandan19 Welcome to BYC.

thank u for the advice. she is scabbed up and swollen underneath the wing, is that normal? maybe I will let her out when the mallard mating season is over. we have a pond on our property that she would enjoy and I want her to be able to enjoy it. jake used to do good with the mallards but he was a male. do u think after mating season it would be ok to let her out with the mallards? it is so cute the mallard males and females come up to the pen to visit with jake and daisy so they are getting used to be around each other which I think is good

Once mating season is over for the mallards it would probably be okay but Mallards are notorious for ganging up on females so your scovy would probably be caught up in that. Best to wait.

Check that swelling out it may have some infection in there. you can use warm Epsom salt water to rinse it out or just plain salty water. Just don't let her drink this solution especially the ES it is also a laxative. I can't see how the drake could have hurt her under her wing. what they do though with those claws is when mating they do stand on their backs[wings] and trying to hold on they can damage their wings but it usually isn't anything serious unless the drake only has one female to breed then she can really take a beating so to speak. It is best for each drake to have 3-4 females to keep over mating from happening.
