I wanted to make my introductions. I am new to this site and also new to raising chickens. We had chickens when I was a child but I wasn't involved in the process but I recently decided I wanted to raise my own for meat and eggs. I have about 70 right now of various breeds and they are almost 5 weeks old. I am very happy to say that I have not lost any birds so far. Many of them will walk up to me and want me to touch them or hold them. The other day I was checking their food and water when one of the Australorps walked up and kept brushing against my hand and wanting attention. I have one bird in particular that is very bold and no matter what is happening I can count on it to be the first chick to check something out. When I first got them I have to admit I had some fears and doubts about my abilities but as time has gone by I am realizing that I can give them what they need.

I have learned quite a bit from this site and hope to contribute when I've learned a bit more.

Since the weekend has been so nice I worked on the coop which is nearly finished.

Today I decided to make temporary area so I could take a couple chicks outside and let them experience the great temperatures. Until today they'd never spent any amount of time out in the open and you could tell it was foreign to them. I started by just sitting outside with one of them and trying to get her used to being outside and then I put her back in the brooder so I could put up the fence. She resisted going back in the brooder and tried walking up my arm so she could stay with me. Once the fencing was up I took 3 outdoors and of course that included the one that had gone out with me earlier as she had made certain to run up to me. Two of them adapted quickly but one was not happy with the situation and only became interested in being outdoors when I got within a foot of her and then she relaxed and started exploring.

I have a habit of doing things big. I guess I lived in Texas too long lol. They certainly are taking a lot of my time but they are giving me so much more in return.
