Hello, Dee --
Congrats on joining BYC and the wonderful world of poultry! There is plenty of good advice here, but as someone who has both chickens and ducks (as well as geese), my first suggestion, and you may already know this, is to house your chicks and ducklings separately because of the ducklings' incredible ability to make messes.
Waterfowl like to get in their water, splash their water, dabble their food-filled bills in their water and generally create disasters. During the day, my birds free-range together, but at night my prissy chickens get to stay clean and dry in their coops, and my dirty ducks manage to take a very small amount of water from a very small drinker and spread mucky messes everywhere.
That aside, I love them all, and I hope you will, too. Chickens are a great first step on the self-sustainability path. Good luck and welcome!!
Ugh! Yes they do! The water dish is always a mess. I picked them all up yesterday and I've already had to clean out the pen three times! They're lucky they're cute. lol.
