New to the activity

Hey y'all,

I'm from Colorado, and I just signed up to learn more about keeping chickens, and the community that surrounds it as well. I'm looking forward to interacting with y'all, and getting to know you and the topic better.

Right now, I have no chickens, but am in the process of designing a coop (for which I will shortly be opening a new thread about,) and have located a place where I can get 3 chicks. I think, ideally they would be brahma chickens because I love their fuzzy feet, but really, any egg laying chicken will do.

Other and smaller breeds with feathered feet are Cochins and Silkies, etc. Plus they are breeds which go "broody*" often so would probably hatch their own chicks and get them off to a good start.
* broody means the hen wants to sit on eggs and hatch them. Most breeds have no broody instincts etc.

That's interesting. Would that mean they wouldn't share a nesting box? I plan on only using them for egg laying and not breeding.

Hello and welcome to BYC. Unless the broody hen was the alpha hen, then yes, other hens would also pop into the nest box to lay eggs whilst the broody is either in residence or temporarily ejected.

Maybe non-broody breeds may better suit your needs?
