I don't think you can be too careful in protecting them. I friend of mine has a very good coop going for the girls, but he built a shuttle beneath the nests that moves the egg down for easier gathering. Somehow a cougar managed to get its paw and arm up it and the hen, trying to protect her egg got caught. The cougar pulled her head off. It was horrible. My nesting boxes are on the top, and the roof, although hinged behind the boxes for easy access cannot be opened until the lock is off. Everything is locked up tight. Wire buried underground to discourage those whom burrow. No free rangers because of our hawks, nasty gray foxes, raccoons and skunks. No snakes can slither in...
