Hello all! I am fairly new to this chicken thing. I got 4 hens back in December of 2013. They were laying when I received them. I then purchased 5 chicks from the local farm store in April and they seem to be growing well and hoping they will start producing eggs soon. About a month ago I got a rooster also. I am in Iowa. This has definitely been an experience! We got the chickens originally because I have my daughter in 4H in my county. Now that we have them I really enjoy them but a journey of discovery as well. I recently found out that my 4 older hens had lice and pretty bad:( No one mentioned to me that I needed to be on the look out for it. I think that we are starting to get the issue under control and hopefully will have happier chickens soon! My chicks don't seem to be affected by the lice but I have treated them also. My 4 big hens are also not broody so I am hoping that one of my chicks will sit on eggs for me eventually to hatch. Any helpful information that I would need would be great:)

Now I was just reading up about deworming? I have never seen anything in my chickens droppings but now am wondering what I should use as a preventative?

So sorry you have lice!! Some areas of the country are prone to these things. As for worming, it is never really advised unless you see signs of worms....diarrhea, pale combs, thin birds, lethargy. You can always take a poop sample into a vet and they can tell you exactly what worms you are dealing with. The only time I worm birds is if I get them from an unknown source and I am not sure as to what conditions they have been kept in. So just keep an eye on your flock. Generally they say if the birds have bugs on the outside, chances are they do have them on the inside.

Wazine will take care of Round worms only. However this is the most common of worm in poultry. Safeguard Liquid Goat wormer will take care of just about everything except Tape worms. These are not all that common.

This my young pullet 25 weeks now with her little ones some
23 chicks she started hatching out at 23 weeks of age

Okay I did take the last 10 egg's away and put them in the incubator
to help her out as she just had so much to do and to do 2 things
like incubating and chasing chicks around just was a little to much
for her so I finished the incubating for her and gave her back her chicks
for which she pecked me for having the nerve touching her chicks .....

Welcome to BYC! Sorry to hear that your chickens have had problems with lice, but fortunately they can be treated and other BYC members have given you some good advice in this matter. What kind of chickens do you have?
