New To The Chicken World, Question On My Silkies

Yeah I found a couple of White Silkies on Craigslist today, one roo one hen and I just can't help myself. My daughter and I are taking a drive to get them later. :)My husband got the coop set up and its 8ft x 4ft and I hope thats enough for the 4 of them. They have 3-4ft run on there for when we're not here.

My husband has to put up a 30x32ft fence for them, we have too many cats roaming the neighborhood and a pond of the property we share with a few other houses. I'm afraid of them drowning if they get too far?!

My husband said NO ROOSTER, but they have been so affectionate. One laying in my lap constantly and has been following me and my daughter all around the house. I couldn't let anything happen to him/her. I'm such a sucker for animals.

Anyways, thanks for being here! I've found soooo much great information here to get me started. I feel an addiction coming on.

I have about 30 silkies. Most of the time they need to be about 4 months or so before you can tell for sure the sex. Although even if you have a rooster, they are usually very sweet and caring.
One tip is that silkies do not roost on a roost at night. They prefer to cuddle in a nest box or on the ground. Be sure to build them good nest boxes to sleep in and to nest in (hens will try to nest all the time). Also make sure the coop is very secure, because they don't roost high and they don't fly as well as some other chickens to get away from predators.
Silkies are very sweet natured chickens and you will love each and everyone you have.
Enjoy!

Thanks everyone, I picked up another silkie today. She's white and very mothering. Apparently she was being picked on very badly by other chickens they had that were twice her size. The little one's love her and she's about 25 weeks old, but has not begun to lay from what I have heard. Then again for the last 2 weeks its been in the 100s and muggy, so I don't blame her.

I figure this way I KNOW I have a hen now, so if I end up with Roosters and I'm great with it. Thanks for all your advice so far. I know WHEN I end up with more they will all be silkies. I'm very attached to their personalities!

What cute babies and boy is that a nice pullet. Congrats and welcome to the world of chickens. I too am partial to silkies. They have such sweet temperments (usually).

2 seconds ago I just had a conversation with hubby about ordering more. Apparently, I owe him a motorcycle first. I'd like to see if my babies end up both hens or hen and roo before I get a rooster first. I only ever wanted 1.

I do know a guy in lillington I bought a coop from who asked if I could help him find a white silkie rooster though! His info should still be up on craigslist if you are interested in contacting him.
