Hello Chicken Friends,
My name is Brittany and I am new to the chicken world and so far I'm loving it! I have 2 adopted and 4 new chicks.
The 2 adopted ladies are Rhode Island Reds. They were my mother in law's who unfortunately just passed away from Melanoma. No way would I ever think I'd be raising chickens...EVER! I was afraid of hers when I met her but since her passing I've been taking care of hers and come to absolutely love them! I loved them so much, I had to get my own.
I live in a small town in Northern Illinois. In our town we're only aloud so many chickens and no roosters. Where we live we're aloud 6 chickens. I decided to go big or go home. So I got the 6 I'm aloud to have. I know 6 chickens is pry nothing to most chicken owners but to me I feel like I live in a zoo right now lol! I have the cutest adopted Basset Hound girl named Bertie, a pretty awesome cat named Greyson (he was my mother in laws) , a parakeet named Moagley (also my mother in laws) and now a total of 6 chickens! Zoo I tell ya! But I wouldn't change it for anything. Keeps things entertaining around the house.
Now back to the chickens...I'm very surprised at how FAST the 4 new chicks have grown! I have 2 Easter Eggers, 1 Barred Rock, and 1 Silkie. They are between 4-6 weeks old right now. Silkie being the youngest. I'm really hoping my Silkie will end up being a hen, I'd hate to have to give it up after getting attached. I'm pretty sure the Silkie is considered a Blue Silkie. We named her Dolly. (Fingers crossed for a hen) The 2 Easter Eggers are Gwen and Sweet Dee. I think they are going to be really pretty. Forgive me if they have specific color names but Sweet Dee is a really pretty blonde/yellowish & Gwen is brown with some black and lighter browns mixed together! Then finally there is Gracie 2 our Barred Rock. We named her after my mother in laws Barred Rock that unfortunately couldn't get away from a opossum fast enough. She was about 9 or 10 years old. The mother hen! She was everyone's favorite. She even had this little old lady limp to her when she walked. So now we have a Gracie 2.
So now I'm hoping after the weeks and months go by this chicken community will be able to help me out with all of my questions and concerns! I'm sure I'll have a lot! Looking forward to everyone's feedback!!
